Which concerns can be addressed in therapy?
Our therapists are trained to work with a wide variety of issues, including anxiety, OCD, depression, trauma, self-harm, substance use, grief, as well as concerns involving relationships, life transitions, sexuality, and gender identity.
What’s the first step if I want to begin therapy?
Give us a call at (505) 884-0146 or reach out using our contact form. After learning a bit about your needs, we’ll schedule you with one of our therapists.
Are you seeing clients both via online and in-person?
Due to the COVID pandemic, most of our therapists are currently only seeing clients via virtual or online sessions. In some cases, an in-person session may be possible. Please call our office at (505) 884-0146 for more details.
How does an online session work?
We use the telehealth platform doxy.me for all online sessions. After clicking a link that we provide, you’ll be asked to give access to your web camera and microphone. Doxy.me is a fully HIPAA-compliant service, so your information and privacy are always protected. You can find more information about doxy.me here.
How do I select a therapist?
Beginning therapy is a courageous decision, but sometimes also an anxiety-provoking one. We recommend that you visit our staff profile page to see if you feel drawn to one of our therapists, or give us a call at (505) 884-0146.
What should I expect when beginning therapy?
Your first session will gather a lot of information about your background, relationships, employment history, and various aspects of your daily life. This helps your therapist better understand your situation and treatment goals. The first session is also an excellent opportunity to ask any questions you have about the therapy process.
How long does each therapy session last?
Most therapy sessions typically run for 55 minutes. Certain types of testing and psychological assessments may require more time, in which case we’ll let you know what to expect prior to your appointment.
Do your therapists offer appointments outside of working hours and/or on the weekend?
Our therapists’ schedules and availability vary and change over time, so we recommend that you contact us at (505) 884-0146 or via our website form to discuss your needs. We’ll make every effort to accommodate your preferences.
How frequently will I meet with my therapist?
Many of our clients meet with their therapist once a week. But depending on your needs and preferences, we can also offer therapy more or less frequently.
What if I don’t feel like my therapist is a good fit?
The success of therapy depends upon establishing a relationship of trust with your therapist. Sometimes clients feel they don’t “click” with their therapist even after several sessions. In that case, we can match you with another therapist at our practice or offer referrals to other therapists in the community.
How will I know that I’m done with therapy?
At the beginning of therapy, you’ll define your treatment goals in collaboration with your therapist. These will then be used to gauge your progress. In addition to accomplishing your stated goals, therapy is an opportunity to realize your full potential and invest your life with greater meaning and purpose.
How can I get the most out of therapy?
At the beginning of therapy, you’ll define your treatment goals in collaboration with your therapist. These will then be used to gauge your progress. In addition to accomplishing your stated goals, therapy is an opportunity to realize your full potential and invest your life with greater meaning and purpose.
Will everything I share be kept confidential?
Confidentiality is the bedrock of our profession. All of our therapists follow HIPAA-compliant practices to ensure that what you share remains confidential. In some rare cases, therapists are obligated to break confidentiality, such as when there is an immediate danger to the welfare of a client or someone else. These exceptions are detailed in our intake paperwork and can be discussed in your first session.
How is therapy different from talking to a good friend?
While therapy involves a level of sharing and vulnerability that we often associate with deep friendships, therapy is different in some important ways. Therapists are trained in specific approaches that help you address your concerns and improve the quality of your life. Professional ethics require that therapists always put the needs of their clients first, which is part of what makes therapy such a powerful tool for healing.
What do you charge for therapy and do you accept health insurance?
We accept a variety of insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, True Health New Mexico, Friday Health Plans, Presbyterian Healthcare, and United Healthcare. Note that we do not accept Medicaid (Centennial Care) or Medicare at this time. Your copay will be set by your insurance plan. If you are a self-paying client, please contact the Office Manager for the latest out-of-pocket rates.
If you have an insurance plan different from what is listed above, you may be able to have some of your fees reimbursed, depending on your plan’s out-of-network treatment policy.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require clients to provide 24-hour notice in the event of cancelling or rescheduling an appointment. Otherwise, a cancellation fee is charged. This is not billed to insurance and is considered the full responsibility of the client.
Can my therapist prescribe medication?
While our therapists are not prescribers, they have a working knowledge of many medications and can coordinate care with any other health care providers with whom you are working.
